Important Visits to Your Heart Care Doctor

A heart care doctor is also known as a cardiologist. The majority of people are not able to tell what condition their heart is in without the help of a doctor. Cardiologists, in particular, can take special tests to determine what type of heart care is necessary for each individual. A healthy heart results in routine check-ups, while an abnormal-looking heart may require more. Keep reading to find out more about the different types of heart care visits.

Heart care appointments with a cardiologist

Outlined below are a few important types of heart care appointments. When looking to maintain good heart health, it may be worth considering the following information.

Heart screening

One of the most common and important types of heart care visits is referred to as a heart screening visit. Heart screenings are extremely vital for everyone, including those that do not have any pre-existing conditions or underlying issues. A cardiologist recommends that everyone undergo a heart screening every four years, max. On the flip side, those that do have underlying issues should get a heart screening twice a year to see if anything has changed.

A heart screening may consist of bloodwork, MRIs, CT scans or a simple examination. Most of the time, these visits do not extend past an hour or so. However, if there are any abnormalities noticed then further testing may be required, which could result in multiple visits.

Heart health

Another common type of visit is a simple check-up to assess heart health. A heart care doctor can perform a check-up whenever needed, which may be once a year or every other year, depending on the individual's health history, concerns and risks. Heart health is extremely important to one's overall health, which is why these visits are so vital.

During a heart health check-up, the heart doctor may recommend lifestyle changes, which could include an improved diet or more exercise. A healthy heart can result from 30 minutes of exercise a day, as well as a diet rich in vegetables, whole grains and fruits.

Disease prevention

Disease prevention is another important type of visit that may be required when trying to practice good heart care. Disease prevention can be performed by a heart care doctor who focuses on preventive and protective measures. These measures may include tests, bloodwork or scans, all of which can be used to catch any minor red flags. Once identified, the appropriate steps can be taken to prevent a disease from developing. This may include vitamins and supplements or an exploratory procedure to dig deeper.
