What Happens During Heart Disease Treatment?

Heart disease treatment is typically led by a Cardiologist, who is a doctor that focuses solely on the health of the heart. Individuals with heart conditions will have varying needs depending on how serious their condition is. The condition determines what the treatment process will look like, including timelines, appointments and procedures.

To learn more about specific heart disease treatment, it is best to talk with a cardiologist. However, there are a few general expectations that can be reviewed when preparing for heart disease treatment. Keep reading to learn more!

Heart disease treatment from a cardiologist

Below is an overview of heart disease treatment, including what to expect and how a cardiologist oversees the entire process.

A cardiologist's role

The cardiologist's role in heart disease treatment is major. They are the prime doctor to start the treatment and oversee it all the way through. When a person develops a heart condition, their primary care physician will send them to a cardiologist who can take over.

What to expect

To start, a thorough evaluation will be done, including tests, screenings, examinations and questions, all of which will be used to determine the treatment process. From then, a personalized plan will be implemented into the individual's life. With the help of the cardiologist, the individual will be expected to abide by the guidelines laid out in the plan. Additionally, there may be procedures that are required to reduce symptoms and treat the condition.

Heart disease treatment has various elements to it; however, there are a few general guidelines that most cardiologists require individuals to abide by when suffering from a serious heart condition. They are as follows:

  • Eat a healthy diet that is rich in fruits, whole grains and vegetables. Items high in fat and sodium should be cut out or reduced significantly.
  • Mild to moderate exercise should be done for at least 30 minutes each day.
  • Quit any smoking and the use of tobacco products
  • Limit alcohol consumption
  • Take medications appropriately, ranging from supplements and daily vitamins to more serious prescription drugs
  • Watch and monitor cholesterol levels
  • Manage stress, depression and anxiety

Other heart disease treatment plans include procedures or surgery, based on the cardiologist's recommendation. When an individual suffers from a serious heart condition or disease, a coronary artery bypass grafting procedure may be necessary, which is the most common procedure used to treat heart disease. Additionally, a heart valve repair or replacement may be needed.

When surgery or other procedures are required, the individual should prepare to have a support system, whether that be a family member or friend. Cardiologists also state that it is important for the individual to take time off from work, school and any physical activity in order to give the heart time to heal.
